The Government of Canada recognizes the contributions of small business to the Canadian economy by proclaiming October Small Business Month. Canada’s small businesses represent 48% of the total labour force in the private sector and contribute approximately 30% to Canada’s GDP. The B.C. Muslim Business Council supports small business entrepreneurs by providing on-going professional development seminars. On Thursday, October 30th at the Royal King Palace in Surrey, the Council hosted an evening of networking and seminars for over 100 business owners, professionals and students.
The evening opened with a welcome from Council Chairperson, Mohammed Yasin, CGA, who introduced MLA Harry Bains. Mr. Bains reminded the audience of their contribution to their adopted country and how the history of Canada had been shaped by their hard work and commitment. He encouraged us all to continue to build an economically strong Canada.
Speakers presented information on various topics. Aspha J. Dada of Aspha J Dada Law Corporation provided guidance on ensuring smooth business start-ups. The Royal Bank’s representatives, Harpreet Minhas and Rachel Kwan, discussed short and long term business financing options. As one’s business grows, owners are always caught up in how to keep the most of their investment. James Atherton of Great West Life Assurance outlined ways for companies to protect their earnings and ensure that the revenues remain in the hands of those who have worked hardest. Implications of Family Law on the small business entrepreneur were discussed by Celina Meghji. The evening wrapped up with a fabulous buffet dinner and networking opportunities.
The Muslim Business Council of B.C. wishes to thank all small business entrepreneurs who made the evening so successful and looks forward to a year of community building and idea sharing.
