A New Mosque for Burnaby: BMIS Launches a Historic $3 Million Project

Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society-BMIS-has taken a historic step toward establishing a permanent mosque and Islamic community centre in Burnaby. The society has purchased the existing Arul Migu Thurkadevi Hindu Society temple property at 7468 Edmonds Street and plans to respectfully convert the building into a mosque serving the growing Muslim community.
BMIS currently operates a full-time musallah at 6409 Arbroath Street in Burnaby, where community members gather for daily congregational prayers, Jumu'ah, Islamic education and religious programs. As the congregation continues to grow, the current space has become increasingly limited. The new property will allow BMIS to establish a larger and permanent home for families, children, youth and seniors.
The approximately 7,472-square-foot property will provide space for daily prayers, Quran education, youth activities and community services. The first architectural design has already been completed, offering an inspiring early vision of how the existing temple building will be transformed into a beautiful, welcoming and functional mosque.
The total cost of purchasing the property, including acquisition, registration and taxes, is approximately $3 million. Alhamdulillah, BMIS has already paid $1 million through the generosity and support of the community, leaving a remaining balance of $2 million.
The next critical payment of $250,000 is due on August 14, 2026, followed by a final payment of $1.75 million in December 2027. Meeting these deadlines will require the collective support of individuals, families, businesses and well-wishers.
This project is about more than converting a building. It is about creating a permanent House of Allah where Muslims can worship together, children can learn the Quran, young people can strengthen their Islamic identity and families can find guidance, friendship and support. Every contribution-large or small-will help turn this important vision into reality. Supporting the BMIS mosque project is an opportunity to participate in a lasting sadaqah jariyah and help establish a centre of faith, education, unity and service in the heart of Burnaby.
