SLMSBC Hosts Landmark Eid-ul-Fitr Celebration, Showcasing Unity and Vision for the Future

3-25-2026

The Sri Lankan Muslim Society of British Columbia (SLMSBC) marked Eid-ul-Fitr with a vibrant and memorable community celebration that drew more than 500 attendees, reflecting both the growth and cohesion of the local Muslim community.

The sold-out gathering brought together families, community leaders, and distinguished guests from several prominent organizations, including Masjid Al-Salaam, MAC Vancouver, and BCMA Richmond Jamia Masjid. The evening was further elevated by the presence of respected speakers Sheikh Yahya Momla and Bilal Cheema, whose contributions left a lasting impression on attendees.

More than a festive occasion, the event served as a reaffirmation of identity and purpose. Organizers emphasized that the celebration was not only about marking the end of Ramadan, but also about strengthening community bonds and laying the groundwork for future generations. At the heart of the evening was a shared vision: the establishment of a dedicated Sri Lankan Muslim community centre and musallah in British Columbia.

A key highlight of the program was a fundraising initiative led by Sheikh Yahya Momla, who inspired attendees with a call to action. He outlined an ambitious yet attainable goal of raising $60,000 annually to support the development of a permanent community space. The proposal was met with enthusiasm, signaling strong community backing for the initiative.

Bilal Cheema also delivered a moving keynote address, recounting his humanitarian work in flood-affected regions of Sri Lanka. His reflections underscored the importance of global solidarity and the ongoing responsibility to support vulnerable communities beyond Canada’s borders.

SLMSBC’s commitment to humanitarian causes was further highlighted through its recent charitable efforts. The organization has successfully raised and distributed over Rs. 4.5 million in flood relief funds, working in partnership with registered mosques and the charity Droplets of Mercy. In addition, the SLMSBC Sisters’ Chapter has spearheaded water well projects totaling more than Rs. 1.2 million, aimed at providing clean drinking water to communities in Akkaraipattu and the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka.

Community members described the evening     as a powerful demonstration of unity, generosity, and shared purpose. The success of the event was attributed in large part to the dedication of the SLMSBC Executive Committee, which spent months planning the celebration, as well as the efforts of volunteers whose contributions ensured its smooth execution.

As the community looks ahead, SLMSBC leaders say the momentum generated by the Eid gathering will play a crucial role in advancing their long-term vision. With continued support, they hope to build a lasting legacy—one that not only serves present needs but also inspires and sustains future generations.
