Statement from the Imam Mahdi Islamic Centre on vandalism

10-19-2022

Last night, we were shocked and disappointed by hateful and Islamophobic vandalism at the Imam Mahdi Islamic Centre. This comes days after another incident of vandalism at the mosque.

The vandalism marks a frightening escalation of Islamophobia that the Imam Mahdi Islamic Centre has faced in the last few weeks as part of the backlash against Muslims in the aftermath of what is happening in Iran.

We want to be clear that protesters are drawing false connections between our mosque and the government of Iran based purely on Islamophobia and the worst of the human condition to lash out at marginalized communities.

We have faced threats of bombing. We have faced threats of assault.

Our congregants have the right to worship in peace. No religious place deserves to be attacked.

We will be hosting a press conference tomorrow to provide further information. We expect to be joined by a number of local and political leaders.
