Surrey, BC. June 1, 2022

For the last 20 years Alameen Post has been serving as a primary source of News and Views on local and national issues that matter to the Muslim community of British Columbia. By raising awareness on issues, we were able to engage our readership on various projects and relief efforts locally and internationally.

In July of 2010 massive floods devastated Pakistan which led to a humanitarian disaster. It was considered to be one of the worst in Pakistan’s history at which point Alameen Post decided to organize relief efforts for the displaced.

In subsequent years we were able to raise funds for Rohingya, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Syria, Somalia and Afghanistan.

Today with the rapid rise of refugees and IDPs from Muslim countries – 60% of whom are coming from member states of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation. This year In Ramadhan Alameen Post decided to partner with UNHCR. UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund is a trusted, Sharia compliant, and effective distributor for zakat funds with a global and transnational reach with unequivocal access on the front lines of refugee crisis.

Alameen Post’s partnership with UNHCR initially helped refugees and IDPs in three most desperately needed places like Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen.

The initiative taken by AlameenPost was not announced or promoted on any platform. Mohammed Jafar Bhamji- editor of Alameen Post said, “We decided to do a small scale pledge request to our family and friends to whom we are grateful for their support. Together we were able to Fundraise more than $20,000.”

Mohammed Abu Asaker -Islamic Philanthropy Senior Officer said, “On behalf of UNHCR Canada, I wish to express my sincere appreciation for your efforts to support some of the most vulnerable individuals in Yemen, Syria, and Afghanistan. Your devotion and contributions have helped displaced children and families receive the immediate aid and long¬term assistance they need and deserve during the holy month of Ramadan.

Thanks to your efforts, your community has been able to raise a total of $20,606; this includes ($4,411) for Yemen, ($8,820) for Syrian refugees in Jordan and ($7,375) for Afghanistan. This means, your generosity was able to provide lifesaving support in the form of basic essentials for (42 families, over 200 people) to afford basic needs for 1 year.

On behalf of the Islamic Philanthropy team, I would like to thank you once again for your dedication. Your community has made it possible for affected families to receive the support and protection they need.”

UNHCR implements several humanitarian programmes, including shelter, healthcare, education, economic inclusion and cash assistance. The latter was identified as the best fit for Zakat distribution, assuring funds are received by the most vulnerable beneficiary families.

UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund follows a 100% Zakat distribution policy, ensuring 100% of Zakat contributions are delivered directly to eligible families most in need. Through the Fund, vulnerable families, including women and children, are supported with cash assistance to cover basic needs such as rent, food, healthcare, and debt repayment. UNHCR is covering overhead costs associated with Zakat distribution from non-Zakat sources.

In some specific cases, Zakat may also be distributed in the form of in-kind assistance, such as core relief items, and hygiene/shelter/education kits. UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund is subject to rigorous governance and oversight, ensuring transparency at every step, leading to the provision of assistance.
