Mayor Patrick Brown visits Surrey Jamea Masjid and Masjid Al Salam in Burnaby for an all “inclusive” Conservative Party of Canada

5-25-2022

Mayor Patrick Brown is contesting the leadership bid for the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC).

On May 17, 2022 Patrick Brown met with Muslim community members at Burnaby Masjid and on May 18 he met the Muslim Community at Surrey Jamea Masjid.

While other candidates are competing for the same old conservative base, Mayor Brown is charting a different path. He believe his path to victory is not winning the party membership but “My path to victory is bringing new people in and having a decent level of support within the party.”

So far since his campaign for leadership has started, Mayor Brown’s campaign has been travelling across Canada and attended various Mosques and Iftar trying to meet various ethnic groups to join the party.

Mayor Brown is trying to change the Conservative party from within and change the political discourse in Canada. Imagine an election where tackling racism is the agenda of all parties and stoking Islamophobia to get votes is a No No. He said, “ I hate the politics of that build on by outing others down.” addressing the members of the community who gathered at Masjid Al Salam.

Brown is a promoter of religious freedoms. As a former leader of the Ontario PC Party he was the first Conservative leader to vote condemning Islamophobia in Ontario. In 2017 he said, ““unequivocally opposes Islamophobia”, “Islamophobia is real and we have to condemn it unreservedly.”

Brown has also criticized Harper-era policies on the Niqab. He says, “I will ALWAYS stand up and defend every single Canadians' right to religious freedom.”

He has, for example, promised to continue opposing Quebec’s Bill 21 – a controversial secularism bill. As a keynote speaker at the Canada Arab Vote dinner he said, “We stand together in fighting the discriminatory Bill 21 in Quebec. No one should ever lose their job based on their faith in this country. Not now. Not ever.” He has also lashed out at Justin Trudeau for not defending the Canadian charter on Bill 21 saying “discrimination is discrimination”, “There should be no partisan debate on hate”, “the liberals have taken the Muslim vote for granted by saying look how bad the Conservative party are”, “Pierre Poilievre PC MP and front runner has does not even think Islamophobia exist by voting against the bill.” He also called out the systematic discrimination under Trudeau highlighting students from Pakistan are having hard time to come to Canada while Muslim charities are unjustly targeted by CRA.

He also Called out on the recent violence and attack on Masjid Al Aqsa. He said, I'm deeply troubled by the violence occurring in Jerusalem. Everyone should be free to worship without fear of intimidation or violence. Jerusalem holds holy sites for Christians, Jews, and Muslims. We must respect the sanctity of these places of worship.”

Patrick Brown is also under fire for comments about Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has called on Canada to do more to help Palestinian refugees, as well as those from Afghanistan and Yemen, as it has done for Ukrainian refugees, He has also stated, “If I am prime minister, I will not be moving the embassy” to Jerusalem as stated by two former leaders Erin O’Toole and Andrew Scheer.

He is asking the Muslims of this country to serve this country and help him make Canada successful. “If you’re not part of the process, it’s easy to get forgotten.”

Mayor Brown has a 22-year history of public service and he is counting on the Muslim community to vote for him in the conservative party leadership. He appealed to the residents of Surrey, “I need you to sign up for the party leadership and if you do we will change the game.”

The deadline for new party members, eligible to vote for leader, is June 3. Memberships can be purchased online at http://bit.do/fUcJz
