5-25-2022

At a ceremony organized by the Canadian High Commission on Wednesday, High Commissioner of Canada to Pakistan, Wendy Gilmour said that Canada is committed to supporting the remote mountain communities of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral.

According to a press release issued on Thursday, the community-driven projects in Pakistan’s northern areas aim to improve health, education, disaster risk management and enhance women empowerment.

Talking about the country’s mountain culture, Gilmour said that the High Commission’s staff has been involved in promoting winter sports and festivals over the last three years and has also visited the northern areas.

As per APP, Wendy also shared her travel experiences throughout Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral and said that playing sports helps to bring people and countries together.

Federal Minister of Climate Change Sherry Rehman, who was the chief guest, emphasized the need to take urgent climate action in her speech and also asked Pakistani youth to step up and take action.

The ceremony was held to encourage women’s empowerment through federal sports and other community-led programs. Gilmour termed it a great opportunity to inspire new partners and stakeholders to come together to support these mountain communities to thrive. Speakers also discussed ways to protect the delicate mountain ecosystems, which are constantly under threat due to climate change.

In her recent tweet, she thanked Senator Sherry Rehman for her comments on climate action.
