Conservative statement on the genocide of Uyghur Muslims in China

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Garnett Genuis, Conservative Shadow Minister for International Development & Human Rights, today released the following statement on the genocide of Uyghur Muslims in China:
“Conservatives are deeply concerned about the genocide of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in China.
“A number of bodies, including Canada’s Subcommittee on International Human Rights, as well as two U.S. administrations, have now concluded that the government of China is committing acts of genocide and other crimes against humanity. These acts of genocide include systematic population control, sexual violence and mass detention.
“These reports demonstrate in exhaustive detail the magnitude of abuses perpetrated by the government of China against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims, and are indicative of the government of China’s escalating disregard for human rights and international law, including in Hong Kong, as well as with Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, Christians, and other ethnic and religious minorities.
“Conservatives believe in the importance of working multilaterally in response to gross human rights abuses.
“We, therefore, call on the Trudeau government to join the Biden administration in officially recognizing the Uyghur genocide. We also call on the government to encourage recognition of the genocide by other allies. Finally, we call on the government to work with allies, including the U.S., to take coordinated action in response to this genocide.
“Conservatives are also calling on the Trudeau government to take all necessary measures to keep Canadians safe, including updating travel advisories to reflect the potential threat to Canadians travelling to China, and to stop influence and intimidation operations conducted by the People’s Republic of China here in Canada.
“Conservatives will be using various parliamentary tools to seek recognition by Parliament of this genocide as soon as possible.”
