The Annual Eid Festival at the Maple Ridge Library was held recently.

The guests were welcomed to the event by Shawna Kirsten , the manager of the Library. Shawna expressed her strong conviction of the library to serve as a venue for discussion and engaging the community , a place where people get together to learn about each other . She was delighted at the continued cooperation of the library with the Islamic Society of Ridge Meadows.
Mr.Dan Ruminy , the MP for Mission /Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows welcomed the guests and stated that Canada is strong and a good country because we respect the differences that exist between different people. We share common values while adhering to our personal belief systems .
Bob D'Eith the MLA for Mission / Maple Ridge East appreciated the opportunity to be part of the event . He assurred the community of his support to the event and looked forward to working with the community at large .
Shakeel Gaya shared the activities of the Islamic Society and explained that as Muslims they had responsibilities to God and responsibilities to the community . He mentioned that besides holding the Friday communal prayers at the Library , the Society is also involved in other activities. Volunteering at prison for chaplaincy services are part of the activities . The Society has supported the local food bank with donations and recently the Ridge Meadows Hospital was presented with a donation of $1000/-
The keynote speaker was Sahmuddeen Saleh Harun , who has a Masters and a Doctorate from Hartford Seminary in the USA . His thesis study involved Christianity and Islam . He informed the participants of the need for spiritual upliftment which Muslims try to achieve by fasting in the month of Ramadan. It is through a spirit of self denial of physical pleasures that the spiritual upliftment takes place . The session was followed by a question and answer session .
A delicious lunch was served to the guests at the end of the event .
