How to Amend Your Canadian Income Tax Return

5-02-2017

Filing Canadian income tax returns is a relatively straightforward process that can be done online. But mistakes happen, and sometimes tax returns need to be changed after they've been filed.

Do not file another return for that year.

Wait until you receive your notice of assessment before asking for changes to your return.

Generally you can only request a change to a return for a tax year ending in any of the 10 previous calendar years. For example, a request made in 2017 must relate to the 2007 or a later tax year to be considered.

To make changes to your most recent Canadian income tax return, or to Canadian income tax returns for the previous two years, you can use the My Account tax service. Once you log in, select "Change my return."

You can also change your address using the My Account tax service.

Making Changes to Your Income Tax Return by Mail
To make changes to a Canadian income tax return by mail, either write a letter with details of your request or complete a T1-ADJ T1 Adjustment Request form (in PDF). You can request changes for tax years ending in any of the previous 10 calendar years.

You must include:
•    your social insurance number
•    your address
•    a telephone number where you can be reached during the day
•    supporting documentation for the changes you are requesting
•    supporting documentation for your original claim, if you haven't sent it before.

Processing times
•    online, usually within 2 weeks
•    by mail, usually within 8 weeks

It may take longer if:
•    Your request is sent in spring or early summer
•    Your request needs more review
•    We have to contact you or your authorized representative for more information or documentation

When the review is done CRA will send you:
•    a notice of reassessment showing any changes to your return and
•    a letter explaining why we did not make the changes you asked for or if no changes were needed
