Dylann guilty Verdict Exposes Media Double standards on "Terrorism"

12-15-2016

CHARLESTON, S.C Dylann Roof on June 17, 2015 slayed 9 black parishioners during a Bible study in a Charleston church.

911 caller Polly Sheppard's phone call was played in the court for the jurors which starts with a prayer and a plea for help: "Please answer. Oh, God."

Roof came into Wednesday night Bible study, took the lesson from the church's pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, and sat down beside him quietly for 45 minutes. When the shots were fired Sheppard said she dove under a table. After the Shootings, Roof walked closer to Sheppard said to her, “I wanted to leave you alive” to tell the world why he attacked a historic African-American church.

"I have to. I have to," Sheppard recalled Roof telling her. "You're raping our women and taking over the nation."

He confessed to the FBI that he carried out the killings after researching “black on white crime” on the internet and He chose the church because that setting posed little danger to him.

On Thursday December 15th, Dylann Roof was found Guilty in the chilling attack on nine black church members.

Now after the Guilty Verdict, a look at major news network’s coverage reveals the double standards that exist with regards to crimes committedby Dylann Roof.

Daily Mail in Uk in an article on 20 June 2015 said, “Step-mother of the Charleston killer Dylann Roof reveals he was 'church-going, smart kid' corrupted by 'hours spent locked in his room looking at bad stuff on his computer'.”

The fact that he was a church goer, his faith is not under scrutiny. Rightly, it should not be.

The question is, has the media evolved? or was it just an omission on their part.  This would have been Unlikely had the crime was committed by a Muslim.

Muslim organizations would have been called upon to defend their faith. Every Muslim who attends a mosque would have been suspected of being part of a “sleeper cell.”  Right wing news channels would have demanded Muslim Imams to explain what they are preaching and calls for Mosque surveillance would have been made.

The widely held views of Muslims are affirmed with the Dylanns guilty Verdict. The handling of news coverage about Muslim criminals when compared with Non-Muslim criminals is usually biased against their faith. Major News outlets have yet to call the criminal action of Dylann anything but a terrorist incident.

NY Times in their article called “Dylann S. Roof, a self-radicalized young white supremacist.”

Fox News  stated, “convicted Dylann Roof in the shootings that killed nine black church members during a Bible study in Charleston last year, a verdict that could lead to a death sentence for the self-avowed white supremacist.”

NBC News article said, “Self-declared white supremacist Dylann Roof was found guilty.”

Times in their article said, “Dylann Roof, the avowed white supremacist.”

LA Times said, “Dylann Roof, the white supremacist charged.”

The Guardian said, “Dylann Roof, the self-avowed white supremacist.”

The Massacre committed by Dylann Roof was terrorism and Dylann Roof should be called a terrorist.

If not, it is clear terrorism is reserved only for Muslim criminals.
