Remembering the Bosnia Srebrenica Genocide

7-12-2016

On Monday July 11th, 2016 in Srebrenica,  Thousands of people gathered to mark the 21st anniversary of Europe's worst mass genocide since the Holocaust. They were also attending the final funeral rites of 127 newly-found victims.

Sobbing Family members hugged the coffins for the last time before they were buried. Among the dead the youngest victim buried was 14 and the oldest 77.

Nihad Krupic was among the families visiting the memorial f
rom Vancouver. Nihad has a  Message to Canadian, American and friends all over the world, `` Please don't forget  to remember genocide in Bosnia.``

Nihad expressed his condolences to AlameenPost readership.

``Yesterday on July 11th  I was at the place where my people were brutally killed in cold blood by Serbs without any mercy. They were killed because of their faith and their love for  Islam and their undoubted  loyalty and love to their homeland Bosnia and Herzegovina .

Today  almost  two decades later I am still overwhelmed with emotions and have no more words to describe my feelings.  If you respect me as a persona as a friend, as your brother in Islam, you must respect Srebrenica memorials. It means a lot to me.``

Srebrenica was declared safe haven for civilians by the United Nations but that didn't stop the Serb soldiers from attacking the town they besieged for years. On July 11, 1995, they advanced on most of the town's Muslim population.

Muslim`s had to rush to the nearby UN compound hoping that the Dutch peacekeepers would protect them.

The UN peacekeepers were outnumbered and outgunned.  The UN peacekeepers watched helplessly as Muslim men and boys were separated for execution, while the women and girls were sent to Bosnian government-held territory.

Almost 15,000 residents who tried to flee through the woods were also hunted down and killed mercilessly.

Nihad hopes and wishes that Srebrenica genocide will never happen again to anyone. ``He prays that Dear God protect us all from tragedies like this one and punish those who planned,  organized and executed the killings of 8372 of my people in Srebrenica,  Bosnia and Herzegovina.``
