Masjid As Salaam and Education Corner Speaks

6-28-2016

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and the month of fasting for Muslims. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam; the others are confession of faith, five daily prayers, Zakah (almsgiving) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah).

Fasting in Ramadan is a main pillar of Islam that helps Muslim grow closer to the One God, Allah swt. According to the Qur’an “Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed to those before you, so that you may learn self-restraint”. Fasting, which is recognized for its health, spiritual and psychological benefits, is considered by Muslims as a means to improve one’s moral character and provides an opportunity for a spiritual renewal.

Form the very beginning and upon completion of Masjid As Salaam in the early 2000, it has played a very important role in the lives of Muslims, less aware Muslims and the Canadians.
Our mission is to:
•    Educate both Muslims and non-Muslim in an attempt to counter distortions and misconceptions about Islamic beliefs and practice.
•    To demonstrate the Islamic origins of modern values like the rule of law and sciences.
•    To promote Islam as a source of enlightenment and to promote those values that bring about a healthy society.

Masjid al-Salaam offers support to new Muslims during their transition to Islam. The support is multifaceted and includes education, special events and counselling.
Apart from regular dawa work we also provide the following:

Syrian Refugees
The Government of Canada resettled 25,000 Syrian refugees between November 2015 and February 29, 2016. This included government-supported and privately sponsored refugees. Resettling refugees is a proud and important part of Canada's humanitarian tradition. It reflects Canada’s commitment to Canadians and demonstrates to the world that we have a shared responsibility to help people who are displaced and persecuted.

Masjid As Salaam and Education Centre also plays an important role for the refugees settled in Burnaby and New West Minster area by assisting these brothers and sisters through our food bank, zakat and language through volunteers. We plan to offer English as a second language and computer classes in the fall of this year.
On behalf of Masjid As Salaam and Education centre I wish you and your family a successful Ramadan and a Happy 2016 Eid
