100-year-old rare copy of Qur’an sold for $80,000 in Istanbul

Istanbul : A rare copy of the Holy Qur’an, dating back to the end of the Ottoman Empire over 100 years ago, was sold in the Turkish city of Istanbul for almost $80,000 at auction.
Turkish daily newspaper Sabah reported that the auction was held at a hotel in downtown Istanbul on the sidelines of an exhibition featuring hundreds of paintings, drawings and manuscripts dating back to the period of the Ottoman Empire.
This copy of the Holy Qur’an was transcribed by Hasan Sabri, one of the greatest calligraphers of that era. It is written in Arabic calligraphy Thuluth and 24 karat gold-plated.
A Dua (prayers) plaque, written in Thuluth by Ahmed Kamil Akdik – one of the most famous calligraphers during the period of founding the Republic of Turkey, was sold for nearly $14,000. Also, a set of original gold encrusted porcelain cups, dating back to the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, was sold at the auction.—AB/IINA
