FAMILY NIGHT 2015 A HUGE SUCCESS

The Special Event Family Night Dinner hosted by The Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims, on Saturday October 31st was a tremendous success this year. Partial funding for this event was provided by the Province of British Columbia.

An annual fixture in the Society’s calendar, this is an annual event that most people look forward to. There was entertainment, good food, and plaque awarding ceremonies. Kids were thrilled by a clown and magician. There was also face painting for kids and a bouncing castle to keep the children entertained.

The dinner night was held at the Royal King Palace and Convention Centre in Surrey.

Amongst the prominent guests present were, Sue Hammell ,MLA Surrey-Green Timbers, Bruce Ralston MLA Surrey- Whalley, Harry Bains MLA Surrey- Newton,   Randeep Sarai, MP Surrey Centre and  Sukh Dhaliwal, MP, Surrey- Newton.

The program was once again very ably hosted by Ashiana Khan, who welcomed all to the function on behalf of the Society. Ashiana kept the crowd entertained with her fluent Urdu and Shayari.

The President of the Society Bob Ibrahim informed the gathering about the achievements of the Society during the past year and laid out plans for the future.

He said that the Society had once again done a tremendous job this past year with its various programs and charities that touched the lives of many. He thanked the board of directors for all the hard work they did and looked forward to their support in the future. Some of the programs that were done by the society were donations to both Surrey Food Bank and the Muslim Food Bank. Members of the society also helped prepare food at the Fiji Islamic Centre for fundraising. A public Iftaar was organized by the society during the month of Ramadhan. Funds were also collected by the ladies of the society during Mother Daughter Night for Osteoporosis Society of BC. A cheque for $1000.00 was presented to the organization by representatives of the Society.

A further cheque of $1000.00 was given to Unicef Canada by the Society in aid of children of Gaza fund.

The society also collected funds with the Muslim Business Council to purchase special beds for geriatric patients in hospitals.

Recently the society organized a very successful Health Fair with the Burnaby branch of the BC Muslim Association.

Newly elected members of parliament Sukh Dhailiwal  and Randeep Sarai both stressed the importance of  organizations like the our society which provides a much needed service to the community. MLA Harry Bains also acknowledged the work done by The Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims over the years and was thankful that the Society provided much needed service for the less fortunate.

The society is in the process of organizing a Youth in Motion seminar where youths from the age of 8 to 15 can register and attend a free seminar on Sunday November 11th in Surrey. Brother Asad, a PhD student and instructor in criminology at SFU, who will conduct this seminar, gave a brief overview of what the workshop will be about.

The Society awarded plaques of recognition to Sadia Samiullah and Ahmed Ameer Khan their hard work and contribution amongst the community. The plaques were handed out by the invited guests present.

Dance items by the Fiji Canada Dance Team were enjoyed by the audience

The program ended with musical entertainment by AR Music group, who had  new talent performing this year.
