Change is coming to Canada

11-04-2015

I’m writing you today energized about the work that lies ahead. After nearly 10 years of Conservative government, Canadians voted for change yesterday and elected a new Liberal government.

Now it’s time for Canadians to ensure Justin Trudeau's government actually delivers progressive change. There is so much to do. Here are just a few examples:

  • scrapping family income splitting and rolling back the doubling of TFSA limits;
  • ensuring wealthy Canadians and corporations pay their fair share of tax;
  • repealing C-51 and the terrible anti-union bills C-377 and C-525;
  • acting on the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission;
  • expanding the Canada Pension Plan and building new needed national programmes such as child care and pharmacare;
  • investing in transit, clean technology and affordable housing;
  • ushering in fairness and dignity to immigration and refugee policy;
  • taking action on climate change with strong greenhouse gas emissions targets;
  • bringing in electoral reform with proportional representation.

That’s where the Broadbent Institute comes in.

Our leading research on income splitting and TFSAs showed why these costly policies were such bad ideas: exacerbating inequality with benefits flowing disproportionately to the wealthiest families.

Stay tuned for more important contributions on key issues in the upcoming weeks, such as seniors’ poverty and the green economy.

There is much work to do to build a better Canada. Let’s get it right.

With hope,
