NDP Hosts Eid open House with the Muslim Community

8-17-2015

On July 30th, 2015, as Prime Minister Harper was preparing to drop the writ, BC Muslim Community was celebrating Eid ul Fitr, Marking the end of Ramadan, hosted by Surrey’s New Democrat Official Opposition MP’s and MLA’s. This just about sums it all up as we head to the polls on October 19th, 2015.

The community witnessed was the largest Muslim Political gathering. Never before have anyone seen so many Muslim Canadians energized and charged, showing willingness to attend a dinner or gathering hosted by a political party. Clearly, there is shift in Muslim Canadian Voting pattern favouring NDP over traditional Liberals, and it could be felt during the celebrations.
The mood, the scene, and the level of energy was completely different at the Taj Park Convention Center in Surrey.

Canadian Muslim Community, often seen as a laidback, and carefree community when it comes to political involvement, and it is true. Despite, being the second largest faith of the country, numbering close to million people, Canadian Muslims have not made headways at the political front as other smaller community has. However, a new level of energy and willingness to take charge by being involved in political decision making has finally dawn upon the community.

As we moved around you can see there were Muslim community members from all different walks of life, and all ethnicities, present, Arab, Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Indian, Fijian, Pakistanis and much more.

Anyone who attended would vouch, it was clear in which direction Muslim Vote was headed – New Democratic Party – Yes NDP. This however, should not come as a surprise to anyone, the Liberals or the Conservatives.

Over past several years NDP has made tremendous gains, and inroads with the Canadian Muslim Community across the nation, mostly at the expense of the Liberals, as even among those small minority which did participated in past, mainly supporting Liberals, have now been disenfranchised with them. The straw which broke the camel’s back was Liberal Party’s blind endorsement of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives Bill C-151.

Among the hosts present were BC Provincial Official Opposition Leader, Mr. John Horgan, Jinny Sims, Bruce Ralston, Harry Bains, Jasbir Sandhu, Bruce Ralston, Sue Hammell, and Burnaby’s Raj Chouhan.

On behalf of the local Muslim Community we would like to congratulate and express our gratitude to the local MP’s and MLA, for celebrating this annual occasion for the past several years, which with each passing year is getting larger, and hopefully one day will be held at even larger venue like Vancouver Convention Center. We believe, the rate at which NDP is gaining popularity among the local Muslims, it may be that in near future such celebration be held at venues like Convention Center.

We wish all the NDP candidates very best in an upcoming federal election.
