Halifax Muslims clean Herring Cove Provincial Park reserve

About 20 people from Ummah Mosque and the Maritime Muslim Academy spent Monday night picking up garbage at one of Halifax's most scenic parks.
With garbage bags and gloves in hand, Abdelkader Tayeb, imam of Ummah Mosque, said he chose the Herring Cove Provincial Park reserve for the trash pick up.
"We clean up to keep the place pure; it's a pristine place," said Tayeb. "We are helping animals avoid eating garbage. [It] is really very harmful to them because they don't know what they're eating."
Tayeb said being respecting the environment and animals is important in Islam.
"We believe [animals] praise God in their own way and it's just a matter of reconnecting with that other aspect of the environment that we live in."
Hasan Ali said he enjoyed working by the ocean at the park. On a clear day, you can see McNab's Island and Eastern Passage across the water.
"I think it's a perfect opportunity for us to show, as a community, that we come outside our own narrow surrounding and help the outside community."
Tayeb said Ummah Mosque will organize other clean-ups at different parks throughout the summer. He said anyone is welcome to join.
