FAMILY NIGHT 2014 A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS

The annual Family Night 2014 event organized by The Canadian Society Of Fiji Muslims on Saturday October 25th, 2014 at Royal King Palace was a successful and tremendous success.

The Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims is a registered charitable  and social organization. The society  regularly organizes and hosts charitable functions throughout the year, proceeds  from which are donated to other registered charitable organisations like the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Surrey Food bank, Muslim Food bank and Unicef.

Well attended by over 400 people, the program started with a moment of silence to pay respects to our brave soldiers who lost their lives in the service to this country, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, and Sgt. Patrice Vincent.

The program was hosted by Ashiana Khan, who then welcomed all the guests, and gave special acknowledgement to MP Jinny Sims, MLA Bruce Ralston, MLA Sue Hammell and candidates for the upcoming civic elections.

The president of the Society Bob Ibrahim in his speech welcomed all the guests and paid tribute to the founding members of the Society. He acknowledged the members of the Board of Governors who were present at the function. He laid out the work that has been done by the Society during the past year, some of which were to provide food hampers to the food banks, distribute socks and blankets to the needy, raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and provide funds to build houses for the needy in Fiji. A cheque of $1000.00 was subsequently handed to the Anna da Cunha of the Canadian Breast  Cancer Foundation . He also informed  guests that the Muslim Business Council had   donated 20  hospital beds to Surrey Memorial Hospital Palliative Care The cost of these beds were in excess of $54000, and The Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims had contributed funds towards this as well.

One of the invited speakers was Kuldip K. Ardawa of the Surrey Food Bank. She  expressed her thanks and appreciation towards what the Society had done in providing food to the food bank. She pointed out that a lot  more people were  receiving food these days from the food banks, across all cultural divides, and we all have to make an effort to help those in need. She also presented a certificate of appreciation to the Society.

Every year the Society gives awards to deserving members of the community who have contributed their time and efforts selflessly. This year the Society awarded plagues to Nabi Deen, Nazahah Sharif, Abbas Hussein and Kamla Khan.

Members of Desjardins Financial were also present to briefly talk about their services and what they would like to do in collaboration with the Society to help achieve the our goals. They, together with many sponsors, presented very attractive door prizes. They also presented a $500 donation to the Society.

The evening ended well with guests all intermingling and dining on sumptuous food and being  entertained late into the night. In his concluding remake, the president of the Canadian Society of Fiji Muslims, Bob Ibrahim urged all non members to become active members of the Society and put his question to the guests  "How can we do better for Canada" ?
