Burnaby to recognize 10 Local Heroes

Burnaby City Hall  recognized 10 citizens for their advocacy and  volunteer work on Oct.20.


The annual Local Hero Awards honour those who have contributed to the community's well-being over an extended period of time in numerous ways. The city received a total of 14 nominations of which 10 were chosen. One of them is first Muslim Woman in Hijab, honoured and recognized.


Farida Bano Ali- For almost two decades she has worked to build understanding, collaboration and engagement between cultures and faiths and to raise money for  new mental health Centre at VGH, and fostered awareness, education and community wellness projects. She is a member of the Multi-Faith Action Society, Chairperson on The Muslim Advisory Committee for The Ministry of Children and Family Development(MCFD-Muslim Foster Children), Chair of The Board of Women's Council BC Muslim Association, a member of CO Advisory Committee  RCMP Diversity, Surrey, worked with Refugees and new immigrants to settle them into Canadian Society and a liaison with The Provincial Office of Domestic Violence (PODV) with Muslim Community. She is on Steering Committee with Mosaic  in Preventing Violence and Abuse to Women/Girls in the name of "Honour Killing".
