Muslim Association members offer free rides in Saskatoon

Waqar Younus's phone was ringing off the hook Saturday morning.
He and five other members of Prairie Masjid Saskatoon, or the Prairie Muslim Association, are volunteering their time and personal vehicles to drive others around Saskatoon this Thanksgiving weekend.
They advertised the free service earlier in the week by calling into a local radio station in Saskatoon and letting listeners know about it.
"We thought why not do something for the community? Even if it is just one person who gets help from us, that would be a wonderful thing," Younus said.
Younus explained that the launch of the volunteer service on the Thanksgiving long-weekend was intentional.
"One of the things was, in case someone needs to go for last-minute Thanksgiving shopping, why not help them?"
Younus said that he and other members of the group had already been volunteering their time to help people get around for the past three weeks during the bus lockout, however they wanted to broaden their scope.
"Just to bring some awareness to the society that, you know, if there is a need and someone is looking for help, everyone should come forward and do it," Younus explained. "If anyone needs help they can ask."
Younus said he hopes others, regardless of their religious affiliation, join his group's efforts to expand the free cab service beyond the Thanksgiving weekend —a measure they are still mulling over.
The group is offering the free rides all weekend from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. each morning and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. each evening. Yousun said people can call 1-306-716-0786 to request a ride.
