Ramadhan Message from The Honourable Teresa Wat

7-08-2014

On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Province of British Columbia, it gives me great pleasure to send the Muslim community my warmest wishes as this weekend marks the beginning of Ramadan, a month of sharing, self-sacrifice and renewal.

Ramadan traditionally begins with a new moon sighting, indicating the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. For a lunar month, Muslims throughout British Columbia will fast during daylight hours, an act of faith that teaches patience, self-discipline, empathy and charity.

The roots of multiculturalism run deep in our society. Cultural diversity is vitally important to create a strong and vibrant social and economic future for British Columbia. Reaching out to our neighbours through celebrations such as this is an important way to strengthen our cultural ties.

I wish the Muslim community best wishes and happiness during this special time.

Sincerely,
Teresa Wat Minister
