Attention: Mayor and Council

City of New Westminster

511 Royal Avenue

New Westminster, BC  V3L 1H9

Dear Mayor Jonathan X. Coté and Councillors,

I Am writing to you as a Concerned Canadian on behalf of the many who are going to be affected by a resolution passed in the Indian Parliament. The CAA along with the NPR  and NRC are discriminatory and goes against our Canadian values of inclusiveness for all- no matter what race, religion, gender or denomination we belong and identify ourselves as.

I humbly request you to pass the resolution put forward by Councillor Chuck Puchmayr to show our solidarity with the millions who will loose their citizenship and will be put into concentration camps on the basis of their religion in India.

Below you will find some links to authentic articles, which address the issues in detail.

I do hope that the New West Council will hear uphold the very basic human rights values that we share as Canadians under our charter.

Thank you.

Yours truly,

Name, Address

'Gandhi's Vision Threatened by Violence, Divisive Rhetoric in India,' Says Ban Ki Moon

Moon held that the attacks on poor and working people, mainly Muslims, could not be seen in isolation from Prime Minister Modi’s attempts to redefine Indian citizenship via the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the proposed National Population Register (NPR) and National Register for Citizens (NRC). all of which were incompatible with Article 14 of the Indian Constitution. These developments, Moon said, raised questions about India’s democratic future.

Protecting India: Nation must stay with vision of founding fathers to fight threat to secular democracy

International observers, including myself, have also been increasingly alarmed at the arbitrary attacks on India’s Muslims based on rumours about sensitive issues such as cow slaughter, beef consumption and inter-communal personal relationships.

Blood and Soil in Narendra Modi’s India

After the riots, Modi’s government did almost nothing to provide for the tens of thousands of Muslims forced from their homes; aid was supplied almost entirely by volunteers. Asked about this, Modi said, “Relief camps are actually child-making factories.

India Has a Modi and a BJP Problem

Shashi Tharoor, a well-known Congress party member and former minister argues that:

Mr Modi’s rule has been bad for India, and it all arises from the Modi paradox that I have described in chapter after chapter — his inability to rise above his narrow-minded, mean-spirited, sectarian political origins to the levels of statesmanship and good governance that a country like India needs…

India's identity crisis: Nine reasons to fear National Population Register (NPR) and Aadhaar

The concerns over the Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) has prompted several state governments to halt the ongoing data collection process for a National Population Register (NPR).  The fear is that the information sought under NPR is much wider in scope and could potentially be used to target a section of the society.

CAA-NPR-NRC is sinister plan to divide country, says Chidambaram

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday asserted that the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC) was a ‘sinister and mischievous plan’ to divide the country and was part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-Bharatiya Janata Party effort to push its agenda of a ‘Hindu Rashtra’.

An open letter to the citizens of India: India does not need the CAA-NPR-NRIC

Our group of former civil servants, with many years of service in the public sphere, is firmly of the view that both the NPR and the NRIC are unnecessary and wasteful exercises, which will cause hardship to the public at large and will also entail public expenditure that is better spent on schemes benefiting the poor and disadvantaged sections of society.

What is CAA and NRC: Know the difference

This is where the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 adds fuel to the fire. Critics of the Modi government allege the latest amendment will shield non-Muslim illegal immigrants while making large number of Muslims stateless people with an uncertain future.

How Hindu supremacists are tearing India apart

Since December, millions of Indians have turned out on to the streets to object to this vision of their country. The government has fought them by banning gatherings, shutting off mobile internet services, detaining people arbitrarily, or worse. After protests flared at Jamia Millia Islamia, an Islamic university in Delhi, cops fired teargas and live rounds, assaulted students and trashed the library. As demonstrations spread across the state of Uttar Pradesh, police raided and vandalised Muslim homes by way of reprisal. Detainees in custody were beaten; one man reported hearing screams in a police station all night long.
