CANADIAN BAR ASSOCIATION PASSES RESOLUTION CONDEMNING BILL 21

3-18-2020

NCCM is pleased with the passage of the anti-Bill 21 resolution

(Ottawa– February 20, 2020)

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) is pleased with the historic vote at the Canadian Bar Association to pass Resolution 20-08-A, Commitment to Religious Equality in the Legal Profession.

“Bill 21, An Act respecting the laicity of the State represents one of the most significant attacks on civil liberties in Canadian history”, said NCCM’s Director of Legal Affairs Sameha Omer, “As the CBA is an organization that works to ‘Champion Canadian lawyers’ and is the ‘the face, the voice, and the future of this country’s leading legal minds’, NCCM is pleased that CBA members voted to condemn Quebec’s Bill 21.”

Sameha Omer, who presented at the CBA meeting, also spoke about her experiences as being a lawyer who wears the hijab, and what Bill 21 means to her personally.

NCCM was proud to present its perspective at the CBA meeting, and to stand beside advocates like Nour Farhat, a Quebec lawyer who wears the hijab and whose career has been sidelined by Bill 21.

The NCCM is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organization that is a leading voice for civic engagement and the promotion of human rights.
