Assault suspect may have targeted the wrong house: Surrey RCMP

1-22-2020

On Dec. 19, Surrey RCMP responded to reports of an assault with pepper spray 8:30 p.m. at a home in the 13800-block of 102 Avenue.

Nouraddin Hnash, his wife and his three sons moved to Surrey about four years ago. He told Global News he hasn't made any enemies in that time and can't imagine why someone would attack his family.

The suspect apparently knocked on the door of a house and pepper sprayed the man who opened it. The suspect went inside briefly before running away.

He describes the feeling as "fire in my face" and says he yelled to his family to get out of the house. It was his wife's screaming they believe scared the intruder off.

Hnash's sons — Mohamed, 10, and Youssef, 8 — both got the spray in their eyes and were treated by first responders at the scene, he says. Hnash's third son was uninjured.

The Surrey RCMP needs help identifying a suspect after a family was apparently pepper sprayed at a home in the Whalley area last month.

Police believe he meant to target a different home.

Three out of the five people home at the time were treated for exposure to pepper spray, but there were no serious injuries.

The suspect is described as male, South Asian, six feet tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black hoodie at the time.

"It's really, really scary. I'm worried about what if he comes back again, or maybe he didn't even go out, maybe he's still inside," said Mohamed.

"If he comes back again. If he comes back and pepper sprays us again," said Youssef.

“Tips from the public can make a significant difference in the outcome of an investigation,” said Staff Sgt. Kirk Duncan, general investigation unit commander, in a news release.

“We are asking everyone to look at this composite sketch and contact Surrey RCMP if they have information that can help to identity this suspect.”
