Muslim Food Bank and Community Services hosted their very first 4km Walk-A-Thon

9-03-2019

On Sunday August 20, 2019 the Muslim Food Bank and Community Services hosted their very first 4 km Walk-A-Thon at Hawthorne Park in Surrey. The weather was hot and the crowd was larger than expected. They raised over $8,000 from families, local businesses and fundraising teams that were competing for a prize.

At 10am the participants started the walk to fight hunger and poverty in our community. People driving on Whalley Blvd could see a massive line of people wearing bright yellow t-shirts chanting and having a good time. Families were competing to win the prize for the most enthusiastic participant while fundraising teams were working tirelessly to surpass each other in dollars before the event ended. After the walk everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch sponsored by Hot Pan Pizza as they waited anxiously for the prize announcements. Team Mercy Mission representing Vancouver Madinah and National Zakat Foundation raised $2270 and won 20 large pizza gift cards to Hot Pan Pizza! A family of 3 won a large gift basket to Gurulucky Treats for being the most enthusiastic participant.

The money raised from this walk will go directly to supporting all the programs that MFB CS runs throughout the year. Currently they assist over 500 needy families throughout the year with their food hamper and Aspire programs. Everyday caseworkers are working hard to make sure families that have no support are getting it. From families that are refugees to seniors who have no one.

The highlight of this event was having people from all walks of life come together in solidarity for these families. Coming together believing in hope. In the beginning of organizing this event there were challenges and road bumps but the organizers believed they could make it happen. The cause was too important.

The Muslim Food Bank and Community services thanks all those who sponsored, participated, volunteered, fundraised and donated. They look forward to seeing everyone a t their next event.
