Ancestry’s Popular Family History Database Now at All Surrey Libraries

12-20-2018

Surrey, BC - One of the world’s most popular family history databases, Ancestry, will now be available at all Surrey Libraries branches.

Previously only available at the Cloverdale branch, home to Surrey Libraries’ full-service Family History department, having Ancestry’s Library Edition available at all branches provides an exciting opportunity for many more Surrey residents to step into North America’s fastest-growing hobby: family history research.

“We’re thrilled to provide this free service to our patrons,” Said Carmen Merrells, Information Services Librarian at Cloverdale Library, “Users need only to log in through the library website while in any Surrey Libraries branch.”

Ancestry’s database contains billions of names, with records from all over the world, including census, birth, marriage, death, immigration, military, land, wills, newspapers, and more.

The Ancestry Library Edition gives users access to all the major record sets that are available to individual subscribers through Ancestry.com. The key difference between the two versions is that those using the Library Edition are not able to connect with individual subscribers who have posted their family trees into Ancestry.com, or upload their own family trees to the site.

While using Ancestry’s database is an excellent first step for those interested in researching their family trees, the Cloverdale branch’s Family History department will continue to provide additional family history databases such as Find My Past, as well as workshops, microfilms, books, and personal assistance to those who are furthering their research or need help navigating the growing and fascinating world of family history.
